Before:
When cold weather hits, proper attic insulation is important to keep your home warm and energy efficient through the winter. Adding more insulation on top of old may not give you the results you need to keep the home comfortable. A continuous vapour barrier under the insulation is a vital component to keep warm air in and cold air out.
After:
Advanced Basement Systems will remove the old insulation then seal all openings before adding the required amount of blown-in cellulose. 17 inches of insulation is the recommended amount to bring the R-value up to R60.

Before:
A complete air/vapour barrier is very important for insulation to work best. Many insulation materials will allow air to travel through it as pressure in the home equalizes. Attic insulation is no different. The home was older and did not have a continuous barrier between the living area and the attic. A closed-cell spray foam was applied to provide the barrier.
After:
Advanced Basement Systems removed the old insulation, applied a closed-cell spray foam to provide the air/vapour barrier required. Once completed, 17 inches of blown-in cellulose finished the job to give the homeowner R-60 recommended insulation.

In South-Western Ontario it is important to insulate a home to make it comfortable and efficient all year long. Insulation will help keep a home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It will also provide for a longer lasting HVAC system as it works less to maintain comfortable living conditions.
A properly insulated home requires a complete vapour barrier on the inside of insulation. Holes or cuts in the barrier will allow conditioned inside air to move out of the home. Common perforations are electrical fixtures, plumbing pass throughs, windows and doors.
Advanced Basement Systems was called to inspect the attic of a home in Aylmer, ON. It was discovered that all the fixtures were not properly sealed to the barrier. The old insulation was removed, the fixtures sealed and new blown in cellulose was added. The recommended R60 was added to create a well insulation attic.

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when uranium in soil and rocks breaks down. Uranium can be found in the ground all-over Southwestern Ontario and can be very regionalized. Houses in the same neighborhood are built on the same soil; if one house has high levels chances are others nearby will as well. The gas is invisible, odourless, tasteless and is harmful to your health when exposed to high levels over long periods.
The gas will enter a home through the lower levels as the lower pressure in the house draws the gas in. It will move through any opening in the basement such as cracks, open sump pits and pass-throughs for pipes and wires.
The owners of this home in Windsor, ON tested the Radon Gas levels and discovered higher than acceptable levels for a safe home.
Advanced Basement Systems inspected the basement and designed a complete system to mitigate the gas levels. The system included proper power venting, a sealed sump lid and repairs to floor and wall cracks.
The home will now have lower Radon Gas levels and remain safe to live in. If you suspect you live in an area with high Radon Gas, begin by testing over the recommended time period.
