A properly insulated home requires a complete vapour barrier on the inside of insulation. Holes or cuts in the barrier will allow conditioned inside air to move out of the home. Common perforations in the attic are electrical fixtures (pot lights!), plumbing pass throughs and structural components or chimneys.
Advanced Basement Systems was called to inspect the attic of this home. It was discovered that all the light fixtures were not properly sealed to the air barrier. The old insulation was removed, the fixtures sealed and new blown-in cellulose was added to a thickness that provides the recommended R-60 insulation value.
