Crawl Space Insulation - 4 Season Comfort

With the seasonal temperature fluctuations, we experience here in southwestern Ontario, insulating a crawl space is an absolute necessity! A properly insulated crawl space helps regulate the temperature in the space beneath your home, increasing the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems and improves the overall comfort of your home.

Why does a crawl space need to be sealed? Why not just install fiberglass insulation between the floor joists above? 

If a crawl space is not entirely encapsulated, hot, cold and humid air will enter the space, affecting the entire crawl space (and home!) as air moves through even the tiniest of cracks. 

The humid air is more difficult to heat and cool - making your heating and cooling systems less efficient.

Higher than acceptable levels of humidity in crawl spaces causes damage, such as mold, mildew (allergen growth = bad smells!) and rot.

This humid, allergen-filled air also makes its way into your home - again through the smallest of openings. 

To improve the comfort of your home, reduce humidity levels and improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems, your entire crawl space needs to be completely sealed from the outside. 

To further demonstrate this point - imagine that your crawl space is a full basement. You wouldn’t want dirt floors, moldy, rotting wood or openings of any kind in your basement… it’s the same for your crawl space!
