5 Signs Your Crawl Space Needs Repairing

Bad smells

If your crawl space smells bad, (and especially if the smells is in your home) this is an easy indicator that your crawl space needs attention. The odour is a symptom of an unhealthy space, caused by excess humidity, which creates mould and mildew. 

Many are surprised to learn that the foul smell is very unhealthy. Through what is known as the “stack effect”, the air in your crawl space is the air you breathe in your home! 

Open vents

The only good crawl space vent is a completely sealed crawl space vent (and access doors, too!). A crawl space should be completely sealed off from the outside environment, just as a basement would be. Unsealed vents allow the temperature and humidity fluctuations we experience here in southwestern Ontario to enter the space and affect your entire home. 

Visible water or water damage

If you notice standing water, muddy floors or evidence of previous water damage on your foundation walls, this is another sign of a crawl space which requires repair. 

Fallen insulation

If you installed fibreglass insulation in your crawl space, and it has fallen to the ground, it’s another sign of too much water vapour. The fibreglass insulation absorbs the moisture, becomes saturated and falls to the ground, rendering it useless and lending to…
