Photo Album: Attic Upgrade and Air Sealing- Windsor, ON

This Windsor attic, just under 1,000 sq. ft., originally had 6–8 inches of blown cellulose and some paper-backed insulation. With no poly vapour barrier in place, the attic was losing valuable heat and air. Our team completely removed the old insulation and repaired the baffles. We then applied 2" of closed-cell spray foam, which not only provides a vapour barrier but also creates a complete air seal- effectively closing off pipe and wire penetrations and any other leaks that allow conditioned air to escape. To finish the job, we properly sealed the hatch and installed 14" of R50 cellulose on top. Combined with the spray foam’s R14, this attic now offers outstanding insulation performance, improved energy efficiency, and year-round comfort for the homeowner.

Baffles

Baffles are dependent on the type of home, but it's best to do them every joist bay. If needed, they can be done every-other bay.

Air Seal and Baffles

The new baffles have been added and the ceiling (the floor, if you're inside the attic) has been spray foamed.

Air Sealing

The spray foam creates a complete air seal- this is the key with attics. Without a full air seal, there's no point in adding new cellulose. This is often referred to as a 'top-up', and doesn't accomplish much! Remove, spray foam, and then new cellulose is the way.
