Fiberglass insulation in attics often underperforms- especially in cold weather- and can trap moisture, host pests, and allow air leaks. That’s why removing it is the first step toward a healthier, more energy-efficient home.
We replaced this old fiberglass with high-performance cellulose insulation. It's dense, air-resistant, pest- and fire-resistant, and made from recycled materials. Combined with proper air sealing, it helps keep homes warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, and more comfortable year-round.

Many homes were built using fiberglass batt insulation in the attic. It does add insulation R value but not to the recommended amount for Ontario weather. Adding more insulation on top of the old may not give you the results you need to keep the home comfortable. A continuous vapour barrier under the insulation is a vital component to keep warm air in and cold air out.
After:
Advanced Basement Systems will remove old insulation, then seal all openings in the vapour barrier before adding the required amount of blown in cellulose. 17 inches of cellulose blown in insulation is the recommended amount to bring the R-value up to R60.

Proper attic insulation is important to keep the living space in a home comfortable and energy efficient all year long. In winter the heat from inside the home will migrate outside, in summer the heat from outside will migrate to the inside.
Advanced Basement Systems was called because the home had uneven spots of insulation in the attic creating a situation of excess energy use just to keep the living space comfortable. The old insulation was removed, the vapour barrier was inspected and new blown in cellulose was added. The home is now more efficient and the HVAC system does not have to work as hard all year long.

This attic in Strathroy, Ontario was in rough shape. The old pink fiberglass insulation was dirty, damaged, and no longer effective. The roof deck showed signs of black mold on the aging lumber, and without proper baffles or damming, the attic was vulnerable to wind washing and ice damming. Energy efficiency was low, air leakage was high, and the home was losing valuable heat.
We transformed the space completely. First, we removed all the contaminated fiberglass and treated the roof deck to eliminate the black mold. Then we installed all new baffles and damming to control airflow and prevent future ice damming issues. Next, we applied 2" (R12) of closed-cell spray foam to the attic floor, creating an airtight seal. To finish, we added R60 of blown-in cellulose for superior insulation.
The home was built in the mid 1980’s and had blown-in insulation. The insulation was uneven and some spots were only a couple inches thick while other spots met R60 values. Inspection reveled a proper vapour barrier between the ceiling of the upper floor and the attic. Unfortunately for the home owner the barrier contained many holes and slices rendering it useless.
Advanced Basement was called to remove the old insulation, repair the vapour barrier and add blown-in cellulose through out to R60 recommended values.
